The Chief’s pole carved by Charlie Yakuglas James, was commissioned by Chief Smith Sewid of the Kwakwaka’wakw Tlowitsis Nation in the early 1900s, acquired and transported to New Mexico in 1941.

The second phase of the project, the  pole will be lifted out cold storage and moved by crane into the Hibben Center atrium. Conservation of the pole will begin shortly after and the public is invited to view the process. Updates will be posted to this site so stay tuned!
