The photography of Diné photographer Rapheal Begay presents a portait of the Navajo Nation, without ever directly portraying any people, by focusing on the land, and the material and visual culture of the people. By bringing Begay’s photographs into our museum, and combing them with a small selection of Diné material culture both from our collection and from the Navajo Nation, we offer an opportunity to engage with a contemporary portrait of Diné people, while, at the same time to consider a number of possiblilites and concerns:

  • What are the aesthetic relationships between a people and their material and visual culture?
  • What is the nature and problematics of ethnographic collections in museums?
  •  How might anthropologists and museums best study and collect material and visual culture today?
