Holzapfel Donation Enhances Ethnology Collection

-News-

In Spring 2016 the Maxwell Museum received a signficant donation from Robert Holzapfel, UNM Professor Emeritus of German.  The donation included funds to support collections as well as objects collected during his extensive travels across the globe.  Holzapfel has been donating objects to the museum for over forty years, and the new donation brings the collection to well over 100 objects.  The majority of the objects reflect his passion for collecting textiles from Mexico, Guatemala, and South America.  In addition to objects, Dr. Holzapfel donated a small library of books on Maya culture and ephemera acquired during his travels.  Dr. Holzapfel's lifelong interest has created a valuable resource for Museum staff, researchers, and UNM students.  The use of his collection for publication, exhibition, and public programs will reach wide audiences.  His generous $250,000 gift enabled the establishment of an endowment that will be used to support the collection.  A portion of the gift will be used to upgrade the Museum's Collections Databaes and improve access to its holdings.
