The Maxwell Museum of Anthropology is a valuable resource for the University of New Mexico community and for colleges and universities in the region. Our exhibitions, programs, and remarkable anthropological collections from New Mexico and around the world provide exciting opportunities for teaching, learning, and exploring the human past and present.
The Maxwell Museum offers a wide array of opportunities for UNM students:
Visit: It's free! Check out our exhibitions; attend free public lectures and exhibition openings.
Volunteer: For students interested in learning more about anthropology and the inner workings of museums, check out our volunteer opportunities.
Learn: Museum Studies Department students can earn credit towards their degree while gaining real-world experience and developing new skills through practicum with Maxwell staff. Contact Museum Studies for more information.
Work: Get experience before you graduate!
The Museum employs numerous students through graduate assistantships, student fellowships, student employment, and work study positions. There are employment opportunites in museum administration, the gift shop, public programs, education, exhibitions, and Museum collections. Most opportunities are available at the beginning of each semester, especially the fall. Student employment and work study positions are listed on UNM Jobs.
OCA provides hands-on opportunities for students to gain experience in archaeological field and laboratory work during the academic year and summer. OCA announces jobs through the Anthropology Undergraduate and Graduate Student List-Serves, and UNM Jobs. These announcements are generally made 1-3 times a year. OCA also works with the Public Archaeology program to facilitate internship opportunities doing field work and technical writing. If interested in any of these opportunities, come visit our facilities and meet the Director and staff. Please call in advance. Ask for Robin Cordero.
