In the early morning of January 7th, 2021, Joseph R. Biden and Kamala D. Harris were certified by the US Congress as the next President and Vice-President of the United States. They begin their term on January 20th. As we in this nation know, and as the entire world witnessed, this formal acknowledgment of a democratic election occurred in the face of an armed insurrection in our nation’s capital carried out by rioting followers of the current President.

At the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology we are dedicated to the study of human behavior and cultures and know that humanity is capable of such acts. It is incumbent on those of us who love and cherish our country and the ideals of democracy to speak up and speak out against acts of violence that are in contradiction to these very ideals. We condemn these assaults and publicly reaffirm our commitment to the ongoing endeavor of illuminating and interrogating the entire spectrum of human behavior.
